In all the years I have worked with, talked about, and spent time with luxury watches, no one has ever convinced me to feel anything other than love for a Nomos watch. I have a profound respect for the company. Not only because it’s a non-Swiss brand, nor for the fact it grew up in the epicentre of the country’s watchmaking hub – Glashütte. Nomos is about much more than German craftsmanship.
Yes, its designs speak with an intelligent voice and are steeped in the traditions of Bauhaus design, but the brand also takes inspiration from Deutscher Werkbund, which, following the negative perceptions propagated by war and politics, once served to dissolve the mental barriers between German products and the rest of the world. Indeed, without this coming together of creative artists and skilled tradesmen, it’s quite possible Nomos would never have existed. The brand is now one of Germany’s largest mechanical watch manufacturers, and instead of using third-party movements, everything about a Nomos is developed from the ground up at the company’s Saxony ateliers. This, of course, includes the brand’s own take on the lever escapement, the Swing System. Enough said.
Nomos watches have clean, simple aesthetics and minimalist sensibilities that sit somewhere between modern and classic. The company’s catalogue offers designs like the casually elegant Ludwig, imbued with traditional Roman numerals, and the square-shaped Tetra. Other lines afford a glimpse into Nomos’ more experimental side, like the colourful Club Campus watches, which showcase the brand’s spin on the Californian dial. On that note, perhaps no collection distils the essence of Nomos’ sportier side better than the Club Sport Neomatik range – a family that shares the Club Campus’ robust steel case, along with features like 200 metres of water resistance, luminous hands and an option of a solid caseback for a special engraving. Now, the Nomos Club Sport Neomatik range (Neomatik referring to the use of one of Nomos’ most recent in-house movements) welcomes three compact models in very palatable dial tones of rose, gold and purple.
The Club Sport Neomatik, since 2021, has gone from a confident 42mm case to shedding some timber a year later with a more manageable 37mm size. Nomos then beefed things back up by expanding the line with a 39.5mm option, before debuting this new compact 34mm case. Nomos advertises this as a women’s size, but at least two of the more neutral shades (purple and gold) could suggest otherwise.
The new models are available with a solid caseback option or a sapphire exhibition window, the latter granting a view of the Calibre DUW 3001 in motion. The automatic engine performs at a rate of 21,600 vph and promises a power reserve of 42 hours. These purple, rose, and gold iterations are the smallest to house this movement to date, thus the exhibition version is a great opportunity to admire the movement’s rhodium plating, blued screws, and three-quarter plate adorned with Glashütte stripes through the back. All three promote balance with a no-date format, beautiful sunburst dials, and an azure-filled small running seconds sub-counter, recessed into the surface of the display at 6 o’clock.
Of course, a reduction in case size requires a redesign of the sporty integrated steel bracelet. And while there are no playful nicknames given to these three new members, the purple, gold and rose iterations look more than at home alongside the petrol greens, polar blues and tobaccos of the range. While the rose ref. 756 is the more feminine of the trio, the gold ref. 755 and purple ref. 757 are saved by the ruggedness of their steel bracelets, reserving themselves as a possible unisex option. The bracelet, now bearing smaller links, can also be switched out for a leather or material band thanks to the quick change spring bars.
Although not as liberal as the ebullient shades of, say, the Club Campus range – the new and smaller Sport Neomatiks certainly provide the wrist with a flourish of colour. And being the least expensive of the entire range? Well, that’s just the icing on the cake!
